Declaration of Candidacy Stephanie Smyth for Newport City Council – At-Large - 2026

I, Stephanie Smyth, am proud to formally declare my candidacy for Newport City Council, At-Large.

It has been a privilege to serve the residents of Newport this last term, and I am seeking re-election to continue the important work we have begun together. My time on the Council has been defined by a commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility, and delivering tangible results that improve the quality of life for all who call Newport home.

During my tenure, I have worked collaboratively with fellow council members, city staff, and community stakeholders to achieve meaningful progress in several key areas:

Fiscal Stewardship and Budget Management

I have consistently supported responsible budgeting practices that protect taxpayers while maintaining essential city services. Through direct engagement with city staff, I advocated for earlier FY27 budget workshops and the scheduling of a dedicated budget special meeting – ensuring the process received the attention that it deserves. The city budget is one of the most important tools we have, and I believe it must be transparent, accessible, and subject to thorough public discussion, so residents understand how their tax dollars are allocated and why.

Environmental Leadership and Sustainability

I have championed forward-thinking environmental initiatives that reduce waste, and position Newport as a leader in sustainability. I sponsored a resolution directing the Energy and Environment Commission to develop a comprehensive 10-Year Energy and Environment Plan, creating a long-term roadmap for responsible growth and environmental stewardship.

Community Engagement and Transparency

I have prioritized open, accessible government and meaningful public engagement. I regularly communicated with residents through Letters to the Editor submittals and social media posts to highlight key agenda items and encourage civic participation. I also sponsored resolutions requiring ethics training for elected officials and establishing the City’s first Standing Charter Review Commission – both critical steps toward strengthening accountability, transparency, and public trust.

Support for Local Services and Infrastructure

I have advocated for improvements to city infrastructure, public safety resources, and municipal services that residents rely on every day. Through sponsoring and co-sponsoring resolutions, I have supported initiatives aimed at improving the safety and accessibility of our streets and sidewalks for all users.

Economic Vitality and Quality of Life

I have supported policies that strengthen our local economy while preserving Newport’s unique character. I believe we must strike a thoughtful balance between supporting a thriving tourism industry and protecting the health, well-being, and quality of life of our residents. This principle has guided every vote that I have taken on the Council.

While I am proud of these accomplishments, there is more work to be done. Newport continues to face ongoing challenges—from affordability and infrastructure needs to environmental resilience—and I am committed to addressing them with thoughtful, pragmatic leadership.

If re-elected, I will continue to listen, lead with integrity, and work tirelessly on behalf of all Newport residents.

I respectfully ask for your support and your vote.
