Boards and commissions serve an important advisory role by bringing residents' professional expertise, experience, and perspectives into municipal decision-making. Their value extends beyond producing studies or replacing consultants.
Not every project can or should be completed by volunteers. Some require specialized technical expertise, professional certifications, or independent analysis. However, volunteer commissions can assist with research, evaluate alternatives, and help the City determine when outside consulting services are necessary.
My objective has been to make responsible use of our residents' expertise, strengthen public participation, and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent only when necessary. I have not suggested that every consultant or professional study can be replaced by volunteers.
